October 2021: ConsultANZ Civil Engineering, Construction, Surveying Recruitment

October 2021: ConsultANZ Civil Engineering, Construction, Surveying Recruitment

by Gemma Nichols

It's that time again legends! Announcing our coveted Business of the Month for October 2021...ConsultANZ Civil Engineering, Construction, Surveying Recruitment. Recently we caught up with the team at ConsultANZ and had a chat with the crew about how adopting TradeMutt workshirts as their uniform has impacted their employees and clients.

Business: ConsultANZ Civil Engineering, Construction, Surveying Recruitment

Employees: 11-50

Location: Queensland, Australia

What impact have the TradeMutt shirts had on your staff and company culture?

By researching 'This Is A Conversation Starter' and purchasing the shirts, we realised it was time to have a mental health conversation with our internal staff. While we talk to our construction and civil engineering candidates and clients about their lives every day, we sometimes forget to check in on those that make our company tick.

We are aware that many people's mental health has deteriorated since the start of the pandemic, and our staff needs even more support during these uncertain times.

Our employees' mental wellbeing translates directly to improved business performance, and for a small team like ours, this is very important.

The arrival of our TradeMutt shirts became a catalyst to take a break from our duties and have a conversation about what has been going on in our lives. We utilised Beyond Blue's 'Mental Health in the Workplace' toolbox talk training package. We covered three topics that facilitated a candid chat about mental health in the workspace and the support available to everyone at ConsultANZ.

Topic1: About anxiety and depression

Topic 2: The relationship between the workplace and mental health

Topic 3: Taking action to support someone at work

The training was a true conversation starter. Many of us shared our experiences with anxiety or depression. We talked about the signs to watch, the struggles, the impact of these conditions on our personal and professional lives, and the help available.

What impact have the TradeMutt shirts had on your customers?

The shirts being so bold and bright do precisely what they are meant to do: start a conversation! Of course, the shirts do not go unnoticed! Our Recruiters will wear the shirts when attending client meetings (in person or online).

The shirts have allowed our staff to promote and spread the word about TradeMutt's "TIACS" initiative, and they serve as a great icebreaker.

What stories of impact have come out of your business wearing TradeMutt gear?

Recently our Director donned his TradeMutt shirt and headed into Brisbane City for a business lunch. Within one hour, he had been approached by five different parties within the restaurant commenting on the shirt and the fact it was a "conversation starter." Obviously, some had prior information about TradeMutt and its message. This was amongst a few jibes from people he was meeting of "Did you lose a bet?". Either way, it seems the shirt was a catalyst for being a conversation starter!

Why does your business support TradeMutt?

Here at ConsultANZ Recruitment, we talk to people in the construction and civil engineering industries every day. These industries are overwhelmingly male, stressful and with long working hours.

Our Director Peter Laver worked on high octane road reconstruction projects in the UK that ran 24/7 and experienced these high pressure, intense working environments first-hand. After working 75-hour weeks on-site for a few years, he suffered burnout and decided to pursue a recruitment career instead.

Through this experience and daily conversations Peter has with construction and engineering job seekers and employers, he understands that more needs to be done to prevent high suicide and depression rates among this demographic. Many people in these sectors struggle to reach out for help and are embarrassed to talk about their mental health.

TradeMutt's TIACS initiative is a great way to help those struggling to open up and seek treatment, so it's well worth supporting.

It also aligns well with ConsultANZ's approach to recruitment: We encourage all our Candidates to share their unique personal story with us to help them make a career move that will bring them fulfilment.

Would you recommend TradeMutt workwear to other businesses and if so why?

Aside from the obvious fashion statement, the shirts make an impact that can start a conversation without actually having to start a conversation.

It is often hard to open up and admit that we are struggling. The shirts demonstrate the overwhelming support that people within the industry have for mental health. Through the TradeMutt workwear, you can let a colleague, friend or family member know that you are here when or if they are ready to talk.
